Start With the Machine’s History
Before you inspect tracks, tyres or hydraulics, ask about the machine’s past.
A good used machine should come with clear details on age, operating hours, service history and ownership. High hours are not a problem if properly maintained, but low hours with no records can be concerning.

Carry Out a Practical Walkaround Check
A careful walkaround reveals a lot before the engine starts.
Check for cracks, weld repairs, rust and impact damage. Look for uneven wear on boom, loader arms, buckets, pins and bushes.
Inspect track, rollers, sprockets and idlers on tracked machines. Check tyres for cuts and sidewall damage on wheeled machines.

The cab matters too. Check visibility, seat condition, mirrors, wipers, lights, alarms and controls. Operators spend long days in these machines, so comfort and function both count.
Check Safety Features and PUWER Compliance
In the UK, safety is not a nice extra, it is a legal duty.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, known as PUWER compliance, require work equipment to be suitable, maintained, inspected where necessary, and used safely.
